The integration of the DEIPAR framework within environmental justice social work ensures that practitioners are equipped with the critical tools needed to address systemic inequities. DEIPAR serves as the social justice foundation of the EJ-MHPF, guiding practitioners to examine how diversity, equity, inclusion, intersectionality, power, and antiracism influence the relationship between environmental conditions and mental health.
DEIPAR and the EJ-MHPF
The Environmental Justice–Informed Mental Health Practice Framework (EJ-MHPF) is grounded in the DEIPAR principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Intersectionality, Power Analysis, and Antiracism. These principles provide a social justice lens through which environmental housing conditions, environmental justice, and mental health are examined.
Diversity is reflected in the framework's recognition that individuals and communities experience environmental conditions differently based on their unique identities, backgrounds, and lived experiences.
Equity guides the framework's focus on environmental health disparities and the unequal distribution of environmental burdens that disproportionately affect marginalized and underserved populations.
Inclusion is demonstrated through the development of accessible educational resources designed for clinicians, students, educators, interdisciplinary professionals, and community stakeholders.
Intersectionality recognizes that environmental experiences are shaped by the interaction of multiple social identities and systems, including race, socioeconomic status, disability, gender, age, and geographic location.
Power Analysis encourages practitioners to examine how social, political, economic, and institutional structures influence access to safe housing, environmental protections, healthcare, and community resources.
Antiracism informs the framework's commitment to addressing environmental inequities that have historically and disproportionately impacted communities of color through discriminatory policies, practices, and systems.
Collectively, DEIPAR strengthens the EJ-MHPF by promoting culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and socially just approaches to mental health practice. The framework encourages practitioners to move beyond individual-level explanations of distress and consider how environmental conditions, structural inequities, and systemic barriers may influence health, well-being, and quality of life.
